In the weeks following Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death, the image of her casket flanked by planters of white roses became embedded in my mind. It was as if by retracing each detail I was trying to hold on to a moment that had already passed. Over the following eight months, I made Justice In Repose (RBG) as a way to process the loss of Justice Ginsburg and to honor the legacy of her service to our nation. I see buttons as materials that lend themselves to conversations about community, heirloom and women’s contributions to the fabric of American history. My hope is this piece provides an opportunity for reflection on the gifts of Justice Ginsburg’s intelligence and bravery. For those who see it in a shared space, I hope it helps in processing personal loss, leaving them empowered to continue on our march towards full equality and justice.

“When I talk about my mother, I sometimes ask the question ‘What is the difference between a bookkeeper in the Garment District and a Supreme Court justice?’ [The answer:] One generation.”

- Ruth Bader Ginsberg

Justice in Repose (RBG) was exhibited in the lobby of Milwaukee’s City Hall from September 18 - 29, 2021 commemorating the anniversary of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death. On September 24th, a candlelight vigil was held and included short speeches by reproductive rights advocates and city leaders.
